For decades, the sewer maintenance industry relied on heavy drum machines and sectional cables that, while powerful, often left behind residual buildup. The introduction of the RIDGID FlexShaft KM-1004 has fundamentally shifted the paradigm from merely punching a hole through a clog to restoring a pipe to its original flow capacity.
The core of the KM-1004’s appeal lies in its high-speed rotation. Unlike traditional snakes that rotate at low speeds with high torque, the FlexShaft system utilizes a specialized chain knocker attached to a flexible, sheathed cable. Powered by a standard cordless drill, the cable spins at speeds up to 2,500 rpm. As the chain knocker spins, centrifugal force causes the chains to expand and strike the interior walls of the pipe. This results in a “wall-to-wall” clean that is particularly effective against FOG, scale and roots.
“The KM-1004’s advanced features and durable construction enable professionals to handle tough pipe restoration jobs more efficiently and accurately,” says Shelby Gerl, product manager, RIDGID for Emerson. “As our first dual drain cleaning and milling machine for up to 80 feet, it tackles two challenges with one solution and stands out in the industry.”
The KM-1004 is built to handle 1 1/4- to 4-inch pipes and supports 1/4- and 5/16-inch FlexShaft cables, enabling technicians to remove scale, corrosion, grease, roots and other obstructions with ease. A digital cable counter with variable speed control allows users to accurately monitor distance and adjust speed based on pipe condition, each critical for pipe prep and reinstatement work. A built-in temperature sensor also prevents sheath damage during prolonged use.
Weighing significantly less than a traditional drum machine, the KM-1004 is designed for one-person transport. Whether navigating tight crawlspaces or hauling equipment up a roof vent, the compact footprint reduces physical strain and increases the speed of deployment. With both 18-volt battery and plug-in power capability, it ensures uninterrupted operation during drain cleaning and milling jobs, allowing technicians to work efficiently and adapt to job site conditions without sacrificing performance.
“This tool continues RIDGID’s legacy of delivering innovative solutions for pros that solve challenges they regularly experience on job sites,” Gerl says. 800-474-3443; www.ridgid.com
