Liner solves tricky bends in lateral diameter transitions

Relining laterals can be tricky, especially when dealing with transitions in pipe size. Trelleborg Pipe Seals meets those challenges head-on with the DrainPlus 2.0 liner.

The silicone-coated CIPP liner is designed for rehabilitation of pipes with variations in internal diameter and bends. It has the ability to negotiate multiple 90-degree bends and overcome two changes in internal diameter. For example, the 4-inch liner has the ability to expand to 6 inches while still maintaining the required minimum 3 mm wall thickness without any fins or wrinkles.

“Bridging those transitions has been a common problem in the industry for a long time,” says Tim Sparrow, head of North American sales for Trelleborg. “Our silicone coating creates a bond all the way down the pipe.”

Because of its versatility, the second-generation liner product can help reduce time, material and effort during installation, saving the relining company money in the process. It’s a fit for drain cleaners and residential plumbers who take on the often unenviable task of relining lateral connections. The silicone coating provides high temperature resistance, and when used in combination with a range of epoxy resins can be steam cured without the need of calibration hoses. This allows fast processing time so the installer can achieve maximum productivity while ensuring a high-quality install with ideal design wall thickness.

“We talked to so many customers who said there was a big gap in the industry for this sort of product,” says Sparrow. “We feel that this technology can be a catchall for a lot of relining issues.”

The liner can be used on pipe and sewer lines from 2 3/4 to 10 inches, and is applicable for vertical and horizontal installs. It is also shape- and pressure-resistant during inversion, avoiding collapse. The feedback received from technicians using the liner in the field has been positive.

“It’s been only positives so far,” says Sparrow. “We’ve been very pleased with the response. It tells us this product is filling a need in the industry.”

Trelleborg offers an on-site training program specifically aimed at teaching lining companies how to install DrainPlus 2.0. According to Sparrow, once technicians are trained, installs are typically much more efficient than previous lateral lining methods.

“We feel that once a lining company uses this product, they’ll never go back to their old ways again,” he says. “It sets a new bar for lateral lining.” 800/626-2180; www.trelleborg.com.
