Some days it is hard to believe that I have been with Royal Flush for 10 years. But then I take a couple minutes to think about how far my company and this industry have come, and 10 years doesn’t seem like that many. I still remember printing work orders out on carbon paper so that we would have three copies of every order. I know that the environment, at the very least, thanks us for simplifying our work processes over the years.

One of the biggest changes has been the trend toward paperless work and embracing technology. Smartphones and tablets have really allowed us to embrace this trend by simplifying steps like taking a picture of a work ticket or a page in a book instead of making a paper copy of it, or getting a customer’s signature on a tablet instead of printing out a work ticket for them to sign. These efforts allow us to be environmentally responsible companies that are looking toward a faster, more streamlined future.

In order to really go “paperless,” you have to have technology that you know you can trust. Nothing is worse than making a digital copy of something and having it “disappear” on you. Over the years, these are the apps that I have come to know and love, and I think you will find them useful too.

  1. CamCard – An app that takes pictures of business cards and automatically adds the person to your phone’s contacts. I love this because I can take a picture of the business card and then give the card back, so it can be reused.
  2. SignEasy – This app stores signatures. So I can send a PDF of a work ticket to a technician and they can capture the customer’s signature on their phone.
  3. Waze – It’s listed as a GPS navigation app, but it is so much more than that. It shows traffic, detours, gas prices and more. This allows drivers to really streamline their commute, and save time and money.
  4. Dropbox – I know you are probably so sick of hearing about “the cloud,” but this app is fantastic. It allows you to store documents in the cloud and share them with other people. The reason I really love this app is because I no longer need to travel with my laptop. I can take my iPad and I still have access to all my files.
  5. Evernote – This app is mostly a note feature, similar to the notes app found on many iPhones. I prefer Evernote because there is also a to-do list function, so I am combining a couple apps into one. You can also store pictures and documents in this app, similar to Dropbox. I use these “notes” every day to keep track of supplies for the office, groceries for my home, and even all of my Christmas shopping lists.

Obviously there are thousands of other business-related apps to choose from. Some are really terrible and some are amazing. These are just a couple of my favorites.
