When people grow up in an area where they end up continuing to live and work as adults, the concept of “community” is a core value. It is not just a place. It is home, with lifelong friends and family, institutional memories and a sense of obligation.
A southern Indiana area in and around Floyds Knobs is home to Chad Shears. In operating his business — Shears Premium Drain Cleaning — Shears is constantly aware of his community and has chosen to step up and do his part to maintain it. His outreach takes several forms.
For example, Shears’ son is in a middle school program called Best Buddies in which special needs children interact in games and activities with children of more ordinary needs, to the benefit of all involved. Shears’ company sponsors one of the program’s events.
And another example, Shears’ daughter is a member of the local 4-H club, the more-than-a-century-old character-building youth organization that dedicates mind and body to community, country and the world. Shears sponsors some of the 4-H activities. He has also financially supported a community “trunk or treat” Halloween event.
While some of Shears’ empathy for young people stems from his own experience as a child with learning disabilities, he obviously shares with a full spectrum of business leaders and company owners a sense of obligation to give back to the community that makes their enterprises successful.
