Pipeline for Success

Seminars at the 2010 Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo cover robotics, pipe cleaning and repair, rehabilitation technologies, and other topics for industry professionals

A track of seminars presented by the National Association of Sewer Service Contractors (NASSCO) highlights the education lineup for pipe-cleaning and repair professionals at the 2010 Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo International, Feb. 24-27 in Louisville, Ky.

The NASSCO program is part of Education Day on Wednesday, Feb. 24. The complete Education Day program includes 45 seminars presented by experts across the full range of environmental service industries. Seminars also are offered on Thursday and Friday mornings. A summary of the NASSCO program follows. For a complete seminar schedule, see the Expo pages in this issue of Cleaner.

Pipe Inspections Without an Operator?: Scott Thayer, chief technology officer, RedZone Robotics

Thayer will discuss the development of autonomous pipe-inspection robots and when to use them instead of conventional equipment. His presentation will review the unique applications autonomous robots have made apparent after field use.

Ways to Increase Your Daily Sewer Cleaning Production Rates Without Increasing Your Costs: Malvin (Rusty) Nezat, director, Nezat Training and Consulting Inc.

Attendees will learn which nozzles are the most effective for sewer line cleaning and what distinguishes quality nozzles from average ones. Nezat will discuss the true-step cleaning method, planning and control, getting the most from your cleaning force, and cleaning large-diameter sewer lines.

Proper Preparation of the Substrate Results in Coating Longevity: E.F. Chip Johnson, business development director, Sprayroq Inc.

Many different coatings will protect sewer manholes from the corrosive environment, and most coating and lining systems are thoroughly tested for their intended environment. However, the proper preparation of the substrate can make the critical difference in how a product will perform over the estimated life of the installation. Johnson will cover the dos and don’ts of proper substrate preparation.

Collection System Asset Management: Getting from Reactive to Proactive: Darryl Macy, manager, Macon Water Authority

Macy will tell how the Macon Water Authority switched from a reactive management mode, responding to emergencies, to an active approach of regular maintenance. He will cover the history of the authority, and how it can use the same equipment and manpower, yet accomplish significantly more maintenance to reduce emergencies.

Trenchless Lateral Renewal Technologies: Lessons to be Learned and the Relevance of Standards, Materials, and Installation Practices: Larry Kiest Jr., president and CEO, LMK Enterprises Inc.

Kiest will explain technical procedures and material composition in accordance with ASTM standards and why understanding these issues is important in rehabilitating lateral pipes or stopping infiltration. His presentation will cover CIPP coatings; fats, oils and grease; bonding of thermo-set plastics; and cold joints produced by overlapping CIPP liners. Attendees will learn CIPP design calculations for lateral and main connections, how to use homogenous CIPP that is resin-saturated and cured simultaneously, and compression gasket sealing technology for CIPP lateral renewal used in direct-bury bell and spigot pipe joining applications.

Zoom Camera Technologies: The Next Level of Infrastructure Inspection: Alain Lortie, CEO, CTZOOM

Lortie will cover zoom camera technology and why more contractors, municipalities, and consultants have made the leap to preliminary infrastructure inspection. He will explain the advantages, benefits, and limitations of camera technology.

The Education Day lineup also includes a track of seminars from the WaterJet Technology Association, and from the Southern Section Collection Systems Committee (SSCSC), a part of the California Water Environment Association.
