Over the course of eight years running her own business and aided by advice from colleagues, Linda Hudek has developed an array of tools she counts on to work more efficiently — and thus provide better service to her customers.

Still operating as a plumbing shop of one, the 30-year-old Hudek operates within a 20-mile radius of Fairfield, Ohio. Here’s a look at some of her favorite tools:

• M18 REDLITHIUM 9.0 batteries from Milwaukee Tool. “These batteries are game-changers because they run so long (up to five times longer than standard 18-volt lithium-ion batteries). Many times it’s a hassle to find electricity on a job site, so longer running time is critical. They charge rapidly, too, which really improves my productivity.”

• Diablo carbide-tipped reciprocating saw blades. “I just started using these in the last 1 1/2 years or so. They’re amazing for cutting cast iron. They’re not even comparable to other blades because they’re specifically designed for cast iron. I can cut through a 4-inch-diameter pipe in about 30 seconds.”

• RIDGID K-1500 sectional drain cleaning machine with a 3/4 hp engine that spins the cable at 710 rpm. “It has excellent torque — nothing stops this machine. I prefer sectional machines because I think they have more power than drum machines. This one is great for roots and will get through almost any clog. It’s also easy to maneuver because it weighs only 135 pounds. It’s also easy to repair — you can do it yourself.”

• Flex Shaft drain cleaning cable from Clog Squad, which has an outer sheath that can protect an inspection camera from direct contact with the spinning cable and also helps prevent the cable from binding. “It’s a cleaner, more efficient way to clean the pipes because I can put a camera in the line while I’m cleaning and make sure I’m thoroughly cleaning every joint. With the sheath, the cables don’t come out as dirty, so they’re easier to clean up, too.”

• Source One Environmental's PipePatch trenchless spot repairs for drainlines. “Before, I’d have to tell customers the only solution was digging out their sewer line and replacing it. I’d heard about pipe lining and pipe bursting, but not spot repair. When I saw the success other plumbers were having with it, I decided to make the investment and save customers money while making money, too."
