“We designed a slitter kit to get that lead service decommissioned and install a new pipe to supply fresh water,” Hood says. “We identified that if we make a special custom blade — a really sharp little blade — and we cut that lead, it takes such little force to cut it that the lead doesn’t bunch up on us.”
