One of the most common drain cleaning challenges is the buildup of fats, oils and grease. This is where hot water is super-effective in cleaning the pipes. Hot water lowers the surface tension — as the temperature increases, the surface tension decreases. With less surface tension, it’s easy for the hot water molecules to penetrate the FOG build up and transport it.

FOG problems

On September 12, 2017, workers in London discovered one of the biggest “fatbergs” ever seen, in the East End neighborhood of Whitechapel. Measuring more than 800 feet long, the monstrosity weighs an estimated 130 metric tons and is the size of 11 double-decker buses, according to the London utility provider Thames Water. Here’s where relaxed grease disposal rules cause problems.

FOG is widespread

In New York City, grease causes 71% of sewer backups, according to the city’s 2016 State of the Sewers report. The city spent $18 million over five years fighting fatbergs. Smaller cities aren’t immune; Fort Wayne, Indiana, has spent half a million dollars a year cleaning grease out of sewers.

THE TWO-PART SOLUTION

Hot-water jetting

Cold-water jetting is great for flushing but it can’t break the biofilm that is attached to the sidewalls of the drains. The HotJet II hot/cold water jetter is an excellent option for doing both.

Drain additive

Total-C is a water-soluble formulation, containing ingredients that produce a pleasant, fresh citrus scent, which eliminates the source of odors and keeps drains smelling fresh. A small amount goes a long way toward maintaining an odor free atmosphere that all will appreciate.

  • Fresh natural citrus smell
  • Keeps drains free-flowing longer
  • Treats the whole plumbing system
  • Concentrated
  • Safe for the environment
  • No harsh, toxic chemicals

Total-C is engineered with 100% natural citrus liquefiers and fast-acting enzymes that target and digest organic materials. It also combines long lasting drain conditioning bacteria that continue to keep drains free flowing and eliminates orders.
