The 2018 Major League Baseball season kicks off today, and in Los Angeles the Dodgers are hosting the San Francisco Giants. The Dodgers will of course want their season to start off better than the way spring training ended for the team on Tuesday.

The spring training finale between the Dodgers and the Angels was cut short in the fifth inning because of a backup that caused wastewater to spill onto the field around the third-base area.

“I thought it was Gatorade or something coming from the stands,” Dodgers outfielder Andrew Toles told the Associated Press.

Of course, the smell indicated otherwise. After a 32-minute delay in which officials tried to determine the source of the problem, the decision was made to call the game.

“Apparently there was a pipe backup on two different levels of the stadium. We don’t know exactly where the backup was or what caused it. It had something to do with a main pipe here, as well as a main pipe outside the stadium,” Dodgers president and CEO Stan Kasten told the Associated Press after the game.

“You can always say you’ve seen everything, but we haven’t seen something like that,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia told the Associated Press. “It’s unfortunate. We’re all winding down spring training. You want to finish strong. When you had a lake forming around the third-base area that wasn’t going to stop, it’s just unfortunate.”

On Wednesday the Dodgers issued a statement saying that the issue had been repaired.
