Matt Timberlake has been named the third president of the family-owned Ted Berry Co., taking over for his dad, Jim Timberlake.

Matt’s grandfather, Ted Berry, founded the company in 1972 and his father, Jim, has served as president for the company since the mid-1990s. Jim will now transition to the role of CEO.

“It really is an amazing feeling. I have worked my whole life toward this goal,” Timberlake says. “Nearly 20 years ago my father told me he didn’t want to be my boss, but he wanted us to be partners, and he gave me an incredible amount of responsibility and freedom early in my career. I now recognize how much courage and trust that took of him.”

Timberlake, who has served as vice president of the company since 2003, started working for the company in 1992 as a field technician.

“I had the unique ability to work for both my grandfather, Ted, and father and have learned so much from them that I always felt a responsibility to continue to give opportunities to people in the company to grow, succeed, and even fail,” he says.

As vice president, Timberlake was responsible for the daily operation, profit and loss, and management of over 50 employees including administrative, operations managers, field staff and maintenance personnel.

“One of the things (my dad and I) realized early was that although we are alike in many ways, we had very unique strengths we brought to the company,” Timberlake says. “Instead of using those as conflict between us, we both have always been able to share each other’s perspective, disagree, evaluate, and in the end, make better decisions collectively.”

During his time as vice president, he saw the formation of the Ted Berry Trenchless Technologies Team, which has become an industry leader in underground trenchless construction. In 2013, Timberlake was recognized by the Northeast Trenchless Association with its Founders Award and the Maine Water Environment Association with its President’s Award.

The company is in the process of developing a management team that will work with Timberlake as it continues to grow.

“Our goal is to continue to be the employer of choice in our area; by starting there and taking care of our team everything we do from there is possible,” Timberlake says. “We continue to offer a full range of services and can help design, plan, execute and manage pipeline cleaning, inspection and rehabilitation projects ranging from small-diameter water and sewer mains to very large diameter and complex projects for some of the largest municipal and industrial utility owners in New England.

“‘Good enough’ has simply never been good enough for me, and I will continue to strive to own a company that has the best people, the best customers, and does work that exceeds their expectations,” Timberlake says. “I also think it is critically important to have a little fun along the way.”

Timberlake lives in Livermore with his wife and four children. He can be found on Twitter with the handle @NoDigMaine. For more on the Ted Berry Co., go to www.tedberrycompany.com or find the company on Facebook.
