US Radar Inc., a leading manufacturer of subsurface imaging systems, has begun production of its Q5 Series, a new line of ground-penetrating radar systems that deliver US Radar’s signature SmartGain digital clarity at a competitive price.

“The US Radar Q5 units are going to give contractors and municipalities that never considered buying their own radar unit the chance to put ground-penetrating radar to work in their public works, environmental and utility locating efforts,” says Ron LaBarca, president of US Radar Inc.

Even the most basic, entry-level US Radar Q5 incorporates SmartStack, a unique algorithm that takes advantage of spare processing power to improve image quality and increase depth of penetration, especially in soils that tend to dissipate electrical energy. StreetSmart onboard processing — also standard — eliminates the need for post-processing of information so the operator can see and evaluate data in real time.

“The cost of entry for the basic Q5 makes it worthwhile for anyone who’s been thinking about locating to give it a try," says LaBarca. "Yet, this workhorse delivers the most powerful GPR on the market for locating utilities up to 15 feet.”

Users can build on base unit

The basic Q5 operates at a frequency range of 300 to 1,300 MHz. It comes standard with a 1.9 GHz multi-core Intel Atom processor and 10.4-inch daylight-readable LED color display. A single battery powers the unit.

“Users can add capability both through hardware and software upgrades to build the base model into a top-shelf GPR unit,” LaBarca says, also noting — like other US Radar GPR units — a two-year warranty on parts and labor is standard, along with complimentary telephone and email technical support.

Although the Q5 Series units can be used for most GPR applications, LaBarca says he expects the primary applications will be utility locating, infrastructure and natural gas. These new US Radar models add to the lineup that already includes the Quantum Imager, the world’s first triple-frequency GPR device and the choice of industry professionals.
