When portable restroom and septic pumping company owner Mario Moreno decided to expand his service offerings, getting his feet wet with a custom rebuild rather than investing in a brand new combination unit was the way to go.

The 20-year-old Ecovisa-Saniport company has 50 employees in six locations in Northwest Mexico. The Ecovisa side offers septic cleaning and pumping and grease trap cleaning, while Saniport is portable restroom rentals and service.

Standard Equipment Company rebuilt a pre-owned Vactor 2112 on a 1997 International chassis with a 12-cubic-yard debris body and 1,000-gallon water tank to help the company meet the demands of a new industrial and municipal sanitary and storm sewer cleaning division. The company will also offer hydroexcavation services with the combination sewer cleaner.

Contractors seek out rebuilds from Standard for a variety of reasons, including certified equipment and sensible repair options, says Joe Donlon, sales manager for Standard Equipment. “We first find out what the contractor needs based on the description of jobs they are performing, coupled with the usage and their budget to come up with a machine that fits their overall needs,” he says. “This is where the custom in our ‘custom rebuilt’ line comes from.”

Trust in quality

Moreno took notice of the opportunity to grow his company with Standard Equipment’s help. “I discovered a company I could trust,” Moreno says. “Standard listened to my needs and had the technical knowledge of not only the product, but how the product is used. After thoroughly discussing the options, they were able to suggest the right machine for my operation and budget.”

While price was important in choosing a rebuild instead of a new unit, Moreno was mainly interested in Standard’s quality equipment and warranty options. “What sold me was the warranty, the backing and the product itself,” he says. “It’s a new field so I can’t afford to have mess-ups or mistakes with low-quality equipment.

“In order to attract new customers, I need to have a new machine running properly. I can’t afford to start off this part of the business on the wrong foot. When I get a job, I want to show up with a quality piece of equipment.”

Leading the way

Moreno is leading the way for other drain cleaning and septic pumping companies in Northwest Mexico that have previously chosen lower-quality equipment. “It seems that many contractors who have traditionally bought on price alone are now looking for more dependable machines,” Donlon says. “Up until this point, contractors out of Mexico and Central America have bought what I would consider low-quality equipment with the intention of just having any piece on a job, even if it wasn’t working properly.”

Better-quality equipment is the key to Ecovisa-Saniport's continued success. “The point of buying quality equipment is to ensure that it is reliable,” Moreno says. “Contractors need quality equipment that is expertly rebuilt by certified rebuilders.”
