Plumbers have been keeping things flowing for centuries, but the foundation of organized labor in the trade traces back to the late 19th century. The oldest plumbers’ union in the United States, the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry (UA), was founded in 1889.
This union was born in the wake of rapid urbanization and industrial growth, when the demand for skilled plumbers surged. The UA united plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters under one organization, advocating for fair wages, safe working conditions, and professional standards.
Today, the UA continues to represent thousands of skilled workers across the country, a legacy of strength that began over 140 years ago. It’s a reminder of how the plumbing trade not only shapes our infrastructure but also our history.
