The struggles over water

WEFTEC 2010 keynote speech addresses the increasingly critical issues of water scarcity and sustainable water management.

In case you’re inclined to plan ahead, the Water Environment Federation has named the keynote speaker for its WEFTEC 2010 conference in New Orleans Oct. 2-6.

At the Opening General Session, Steven Solomon, author of Water: The Epic Struggle for Wealth, Power, and Civilization, will share his insights about water scarcity and the need for more sustainable approaches to water management.

I can attest to the power of this book. It is a great read, well researched, and thought provoking in the extreme. You can expect a highly engaging talk. During his career as an economics journalist, Solomon has written articles for some of the nation’s leading newspapers and business magazines. He has been a regular commentator on the National Public Radio “Marketplace” program and has appeared as a guest on several major TV news shows.

His book offers a narrative portrait of water and the power struggles, personalities, and breakthroughs that have shaped humanity from antiquity to the world we live in today.

WEF notes that freshwater scarcity is one of this century’s critical challenges, driving political, economic, and environmental realities across the globe. Solomon will share his insights about the growing issues of scarcity and pollution that could lead to a global crisis without more sustainable water management approaches.

The WEFTEC Opening General Session, on Monday, Oct. 4 at the New Orleans Morial Convention Center, will also include recognition of WEF award winners and the 2010 Stockholm Junior Water Prize winners.

The conference offers 111 technical sessions and 35 workshops, plus a huge exhibit of technology and equipment with more than 900 companies represented. Conference details will be available at www.weftec.org.
