Compact, lightweight, easy to transport and disassemble, and able to fit in restricted areas. Those are the standards for today’s small portable waterjetters.

Whether gasoline- or electric-powered, the units are designed to make quick work of stubborn clogs in small drain pipes and sewer laterals, enabling contractors to finish jobs quickly and generate the maximum profit for their time. This summary highlights recent advances or refinements in small jetters.

Manageable muscle

The Model 717 portable electric mini-jetter from Spartan Tool LLC cleans 1.25- to 6-inch lines using 1,500 psi/2.2 gpm. The 1.5-hp, enclosed electric motor with thermal overload protection powers a triplex ceramic plunger pump with adjustable pressure regulator. Patented pulse technology reduces friction, continuously moves the hose down the line, and improves hose retrieval.

The split hose reel carries 115 feet of 1/4-inch high-pressure cleaning hose, 25 feet of 3/16-inch thermoplastic trap-cleaning hose, and 25 feet of 1/4-inch ultra-light thermoplastic hose. Seven nozzles and a wash-down gun and lance are included. The 25-foot power cord with ground-fault interrupter plugs into 15- or 20-amp electric circuits. The portable power pack can be removed from the cart and used separately in tight spaces. For more information: 800/435-3866; www.spartantool.com.

Tackles tough obstructions

The Eel Jet Model CS2500 compact, portable gasoline-powered jetter from Electric Eel Mfg. has a 6.5-hp Honda engine powering a triplex plunger pump (2,500 psi/4 gpm) with ceramic plungers and stainless-steel valves. The jetter is mounted on a lightweight cart that maneuvers on two, 10-inch pneumatic tires.

Additional features include adjustable pressure, power pulse valve, powder-coated frame, removable reel with shut-off valve, 50-foot by 1/8-inch trap hose, 100-foot by 1/4-inch drain hose, and a toolbox with gloves, safety goggles, nozzle assortment, and nozzle cleaning tool. An optional trigger gun and washdown wand are available. For more information: 800/833-1212; www.electriceel.com.

Designed for tight spaces

The Jet-Set Model J-1450 electric waterjet from General Pipe Cleaners clears drain lines clogged with grease, sand, sludge and ice. A 1 1/2-hp enclosed, dual capacitor motor with an in-line ground fault circuit interrupter drives a 1,500 psi/1.7 gpm pump with Vibra-pulse on demand to help the hose navigate tight bends without affecting flow.

The 200-foot capacity hose reel with reel brake and brass swivel is mounted on a heavy-duty frame with two, 8-inch semi-pneumatic tires. The cart has a slide-out, telescoping handle and a low center of gravity. Remove the detachable hose reel and the machine’s overall height of 29 inches drops to 14 inches. Safety features include a thermal relief valve to protect the pump from heat damage, backflow check valve, and inlet filter. For more information: 800/245-6200; www.drainbrain.com.

Jetter clears soft stoppages

The portable, lightweight V215 electric jetter from Ken-Way Corp. uses 1,500 psi/2 gpm to clear grease, sludge, and other soft stoppages from small indoor lines. The unit comes standard with a 1.5-hp electric motor, no-oil continuous pulsation pump to maintain constant flow and pressure, 150 feet of 1/4-inch sewer hose, 50 feet of 1/8-inch sewer hose, and four nozzles. The stainless-steel frame has a detachable hose reel. For more information: 800/533-0551; www.ken-way.com.

Indoor and remote applications

Powered by an easy-start, 13-hp gasoline engine, the KJ-3000 jetter from Ridge Tool Co. delivers 3,000 psi/4 gpm to clean sludge, soap, grease, and sediment blockages in 2- to 8-inch lines. Trap and jetter hoses from 50 to 300 feet are braided nylon with a flexible, synthetic covering that allows the thrust to propel them farther down the pipe.

Contractors can activate the pulse action to negotiate difficult bends and traps. For indoor jobs, the hose reel can be removed from the heavy-duty, two-wheeled cart, leaving the power unit outside. The 1.4-pound Root Ranger 3000 jetter nozzle is included. Its pointed head blasts through obstructions, including tree roots in 4- to 8-inch lines. The nozzle attaches to a 3/8-inch jet hose with a 1/4-inch NPT threaded connection or can be adapted to fit other size hoses. For more information: 800/474-3443; www.ridgid.com.

Well built and powerful

The Model GO 1500A jetter from Gorlitz Sewer & Drain Inc. has a 2-hp motor and duplex ceramic plunger pump to generate 1,500 psi/2.1 gpm. The maximum water temperature is 180 degrees. In the pulsation mode, the 74-pound unit can open 1 1/2- to 3-inch drain lines. Quick disconnect hose fittings, 50 feet of trap hose, and three jetter nozzles are included. The frame has two wheels and a pullout handle. A hose reel is optional. For more information: 562/944-3060; www.gorlitz.com.

Two-in-one combo

The JE-15 jetter from Triple R Specialty is two jetters in one. Contractors can use the cart-mounted jetter to clean 4- to 6-inch lines, or remove the pump motor and trap hose box for cleaning 1.5- to 3-inch lines in hard-to-reach places. The unit has a 1.5-hp TEFC electric motor with 25-foot ground fault circuit interrupter power cord and a 1,500 psi/2.5 gpm pump.

Standard equipment includes a custom-built two-wheel cart, a manual reel with 150 feet of 1/4-inch jetter hose and three 1/4-inch jetting nozzles, a portable box with 50 feet of 1/8-inch trap-cleaning hose and three 1/8-inch jetting nozzles, and a pressure washing wand with nozzles. The jetter fits through 3-foot wide doors and is safe to use inside apartments and condominiums. For more information: 800/356-9661; www.triplerspecialty.com.

Designed for multi-family

The 1502 Electric Hand Cart Jetter from US Jetting LLC cleans small lines such as sink traps using 1,500 psi/2 gpm. The unit comes with a 2-hp, single phase, 115-volt, 19-amp TEFC electric motor, a 36-foot power cord with ground-fault circuit interrupter, 100 feet of 3/16-inch hose on a reel, and four nozzles.
